The HVAC contractor can verify the proper rotation by observing the refrigerant suction pressure and the discharge pressure when the compressor is energized. An elevated sound level or “odd noise” also indicates reverse rotation, but newer scroll compressors don’t rattle when run backwards. If you connect gauges to a scroll compressor running the 'wrong' way. I have been trying to remember how to check for direction of rotation in.

I have a 3 phase Copeland scroll compressor in a portable 3 ton (?) air conditioning unit. It worked great at our last shop but I am not confident that the rotation direction of the 3 phase power in my new shop is the same. If I plug it in and it runs backwards will that wreck the compressor? If I run it and no cold air comes out can I then assume that the motor is running backwards? If so I can then swap wires to make it rotate forwards. Is this a good diagnostic test? Any other suggestions how to make sure it gets wired up in the correct direction?
